2009微软亚洲研究院-UCLA 纯数学与应用数学研究所 第三届中美大学生Summer School

2009年第三届中美大学生Summer School共选拔了8名美国大学生和8名中国大学生在微软亚洲研究院完成8周的学习研究工作。他们由IPAM的数学家及微软亚洲研究院的研究员联合指导,分小组完成研究课题。第三届Summer School课题领域涵盖无线与网络、机器学习、语音及理论研究,为中美两国爱好数学和计算机科学的大学生提供了一个独具特色的跨国交流学习机会和浓厚的科研氛围。

Recently the popularity of social networking websites such as Face book and Twitter has skyrocketed, and such networks now boast hundreds of millions of users. Such large communities provide invaluable information about the structure and preferences of the network, information that has applications including marketing research, advertising campaigns, and modeling outbreaks of disease. One particular area of study is determining how information propagates through social networks, and how to maximize the amount of people this information can reach. Our research focuses on efficient methods for determining who the most influential people in a social network are, and whether these people change depending on the type of information propagating over the network.

· 项目名称:Modeling Speech Signals via Non-uniformly Sub-sampled Trajectory
· 项目简介:
Our project consists of modeling Line Spectral Pair (LSP) parameters. We introduce an algorithm for effectively sub-sampling LSP frames non-uniformly in order to reconstruct the speech signal with minimal distortion. Given a sequence of LSP parameters and an interpolation method, this algorithm will locate those key frames that minimize the RMSE error between the original and the reconstructed signal. In addition, two other sampling and reconstruction methods are considered which may produce physically significant key frames but do not give a globally optimal distortion.

Data centers are becoming increasingly important and complex. For instance, data centers are critical to the operation of companies such as Microsoft, Yahoo!, and Google, which already run data centers with several hundreds of thousands of servers. DCell is a newly proposed structure to address data center design issues. We have studied extensively the graph properties of the DCell structure.

· 项目名称:Time Sensitive Summarization of Opinion Documents
· 项目简介:
Our research attempts to provide a summary of how opinions towards a product have varied over time. A benefit of such a summary is that it allows users to see how current reviews of a product compare with older reviews. We create this form of summary using an iterative algorithm that divides the product reviews into time periods with consistent variances. We have performed empirical tests that demonstrate the efficacy of the algorithm. Finally, we have created several prototype interfaces to present the summarized data to users.
